Afraid of Needles? I was too

I once hated needles so much I used blood donation to conquer my fear. That journey taught me a surprising lesson about another “jab” most people avoid — overfunded whole life insurance. Here’s why it might be one of the smartest financial decisions you’ll ever make.

Two things are on my mind today, but the most important one is written on the Post-it note stuck to my desk.

Recently I gave blood — something I do every 16 weeks like clockwork. I don’t give whole blood. Instead, I sit for a longer appointment and connect to a machine that draws my blood, spins it, returns everything except my red blood cells, and repeats the process. In the end, they collect roughly double the normal amount of red blood cells in a single donation.

Red blood cells are incredible. They carry oxygen to every organ and every single cell in your body, then haul away waste in the form of carbon dioxide. People facing surgery, trauma, anemia, or serious illness often need those red cells desperately. Being able to give twice as many in one visit feels meaningful.

I didn’t start donating for noble reasons. I began years ago because I was terrified of needles. The only way I could think to conquer that fear was to face it head-on. Interestingly, I no longer fear needles — that fear disappeared long ago. What remains is the deep satisfaction of knowing I’m helping others while also feeling the personal reward of giving.

Here’s the surprising part: the same thing happened with life insurance.

Talking about life insurance feels like a needle to most people. I can almost hear the groans: “Mark, I don’t want to talk about life insurance.” But just like that first blood donation, I want you to stay with me.

There are two basic types of life insurance. Term life is excellent when you’re young, have little money, and lots of responsibility. It protects your family for a specific period of time. I’ve owned plenty of it myself.

But if you want protection for your entire life — and additional living benefits — that’s where overfunded whole life insurance from a mutual life insurance company becomes truly powerful.

With whole life, the coverage lasts your entire lifetime (contractually to age 121). Because it’s issued by a mutual company, you are actually an owner. When the company does well, you benefit.

This isn’t either/or with your investments. It’s an “and” asset — one that may enhance everything else in your financial life.

The benefits are significant:

  • Cash value that grows tax-advantaged (no 1099 forms every year)
  • Liquidity and flexibility — you can access cash when you need it
  • Ability to finance major purchases like cars, rental property, or commercial building improvements on your own terms instead of going through a bank
  • Potential waiver of premium if you become disabled
  • Critical and terminal illness benefits that can provide money while you’re still living
  • Creditor protection in most states
  • Powerful legacy and wealth transfer capabilities
  • Retirement flexibility, especially protecting against sequence-of-returns risk

After years of consistent contributions, looking at the cash that has built up inside my policies still amazes me — just like when they tell me I’ve donated nine gallons of blood.

The lesson? Some things feel uncomfortable at first — like a needle going into your arm. But facing that discomfort can lead to tremendous personal growth and powerful benefits for both you and the people you love.

If you’re ready to move past the initial resistance and explore what life insurance can do for you and your family, let’s have a real conversation. And if you’re open to it, perhaps it’s time to schedule your Financialoscopy®.
