Fan Death ?!?

Fan Death, Financial Myths, and the Danger of Advice That Just “Sounds Right”

Could you die from a fan running in your bedroom at night with the door closed?

That’s the question many people in South Korea have taken seriously for decades. Warning labels appear on fans. Timers automatically shut them off after 20 or 30 minutes. Older generations especially warn against sleeping with a fan blowing on you, believing it can lead to suffocation. Even today, many still treat “fan death” as a real danger.

I couldn’t believe it was actually a thing until we visited friends in South Korea some years ago. Korea’s summers are blistering hot, yet this belief persists. Some speculate the government promoted the idea during the 1970s energy crisis to reduce electricity use. Whether that’s true or not, the story illustrates something powerful: deeply held beliefs can shape behavior even when they’re based on myth rather than fact.

And that brings me to the real reason I’m sharing this.

At Financialoscopy, one of our most important jobs is to examine the “rules of thumb” and long-held financial beliefs that people carry with them. You know the ones:

  • “This has always been true.”
  • “Everyone says - this is the way to do it.”
  • “It just sounds right.”

“Sound advice” and “advice that sounds right” are not always the same thing.

Too often, financial decisions are driven by soundbites, catchy slogans, or unexamined assumptions. A single sentence can spread a financial myth. But uncovering the truth usually requires a paragraph, a chapter, or an entire book—because real understanding demands evidence, math, and context.

We help clients deconstruct their financial ideas and rebuild them on solid ground. Does the math work? Can it be proven? Or is it wrapped in vague words like “potential,” “could,” “may,” or “might”? In a world full of uncertainty, certainty without evidence is dangerous—especially when it comes to your retirement, investments, legacy, and family’s future.

A friend of mine used to say you can tell a lie with one statement, but the truth often needs explanation, a paragraph, a chapter or perhaps an entire book! That’s why we dig deeper. We test assumptions. We look for background and proof. We separate fact from fiction.

Are you making important financial decisions based on solid evidence or comfortable myths?

If you want a team that believes in deconstructing and then thoughtfully constructing strategies tailored to your unique situation, perhaps it’s time to become a “fan” of the Financialoscopy® team.
