I don’t know about you, but when I am driving down the road, I tend to want to go a little bit faster than what the speed limit says. So, if the speed limit says 25, I like to go closer to 30.
But when you do the math, speeding doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense. Instead of thinking about how many miles you are going each hour, most of us think about the time it takes for us to reach our destination.
Instead of having our speedometer show us miles per hour, it should show us how much time it would take to go one mile at that speed. After all, that’s what we really care about – How fast can I get there?
If we did that, this is what it would look like -
We would see that the difference between 40 mph and 60 mph means you save 30 whole seconds per mile. However, going from 60 to 80 mph only saves you 15 seconds, and the difference between 80 and 100 mph is only 9 seconds.
The relationship between the speed you are going and the time it takes to get there is what we call an inverse relationship.
The faster you go, the less that speeding Actually helps you, which doesn’t even include dangers and obstacles along your path.
